Police Records 8,163 Gender Based Violence Cases

The Director of Gender and Strategic Coordinator of the Family Support Unit (FSU) of the Sierra Leone Police, A.I.G Francis Ben Lebbie, has disclosed to the media that since the proclamation of life imprisonment on sexual offences by the President on February 7 to September 7, 2019 a total of 5,810 Domestic Violence, 2,256 Sexual Penetration and 97 rape cases totaling 8,163, have so far been enlisted and reported so far at various Police Stations across the country.
AIG Francis Ben Lebbie made this disclosure at a press conference held at Police Headquarters, George Street in Freetown.
The AIG told newsmen that they have collected data across all the Police Regions using established police structures.
He informed the Press that with a view to demonstrate the pro-activeness and effectiveness of the police on protecting women and girls, a police officer in Kambia District and Blama have been arrested for SGBV cases.
He continued that the two police officers are currently in police custody pending investigations.
Superintendent M.K Allieu also disclosed to newsmen that a team of patrol officers headed by ASP Augustine Kargbo has arrested 30 armed robbers who claimed to be friends of the dead.
He stated that 6 suspects have been arrested with machetes and 21 for Loiters.
He reported that the police has discovered that armed robbers are now using cemeteries across the country to orchestrate criminal activities.
AIG Kalia Sesay also reported that they have held several meetings with the Freetown City Council to remove all who claim to be friends of the dead in various cemeteries across the country with a view to nip the issue on the bud.
