The Parliament of Sierra Leone, with support from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), has on Thursday 4th March 2021 commenced a three-day capacity building for staff in the Human Resource/Administrative Department.
In welcoming participants for the training, Senior Committee Clerk and IPU Desk Officer, Mary Kowa, nee Koroma, said the workshop is intended to improve the knowledge of Human Resource/Administrative staff for efficient and effective service delivery in respect of modern human resource management practices. Furthering, she said the training would serve well in the corporate aspirations of Parliament; and extended thanks and appreciation to IPU and the Leadership of Parliament for supporting the initiative.
Speaking on behalf of the Clerk of Parliament, former Member of Parliament, Hon. Rosaline J.K. Smith, who doubles as UNDP Technical Advisor and Consultant to Parliament, gave a vivid background relating to IPU’s support to the Parliament of Sierra Leone spanning 2008 to date. It relates to issues such as awareness raising and sensitization on gender based violence.
She also spoke about a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) IPU had signed with Parliament in light of capacity building for staff and Members of Parliament.
She appreciated IPU’s continued support to Parliament and asked for more in developing and strengthening the Parliament of Sierra Leone.
She also called on staff to pay attention during the training and implement good HR/Administrative practices and processes for the advancement of Parliament.
Speaking via zoom, on behalf of IPU’s Secretary General, Nora Barbiq thanked all for organizing the training.
She assured of IPU’s continued support to Parliament and went on to say that IPU is privileged to working with Parliament in order to build the capacity of staff and Members of Parliament.
She said that building the knowledge of new employees would go a long way to strengthening the capacity of Parliament. According to her, the world is growing fast and people are required to adapt to changing circumstances in light of development.
Hon Smith expressed hope that, after the training, the participants would identify action plan that they would be working with.
