Bio Appoints Nuclear Safety Chair

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has on Tuesday, 26 April 2022, debated and approved the Ninth Report of the Committee on Appointments and the Public Service chaired by the Leader of Government Business, Mathew Sahr Nyuma.

The presidential nominees that were approved include Mr Joseph Kongo, chairman, Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority (NSRPA) and Mr. Kalie Samura, member, Statistics Sierra Leone Council (SSLC).

Seconding the motion, the leader of C4C, MP Saa Emerson Lamina commended President Bio for appointing the two nominees and went on to say that the latter did not make any mistake by appointing them to serve in high offices of state. He also called on the nominees to work diligently for the people of Sierra Leone. Other MPs who spoke on the motion appreciated their appointments and advised the nominees to deliver in the best interest of the nation.

Rounding up the debate, the Acting Leader of the Opposition, Hon Ibrahim Ben Kargbo said Mr Kongo’s appointment was based on his expertise and experience. He also described his nomination as excellent by President Bio, and wished them well in respect of their appointments.

Concluding the debate, the Leader of Government Business, MP Mathew Sahr Nyuma said more education was needed on radiation protection for the safety of the people of Sierra Leone and underscored the importance of the appointments of the two nominees.

The Speaker of Parliament, Dr Chernor Abass Bundu congratulated the nominees and wished them well in their new appointments.

In another development, the Parliament of Sierra Leone has on Tuesday, 26 April 2022 ratified an agreement between the government of the United Arab Emirates and the government of Sierra Leone on Economic and Technical Cooperation.

Presenting the agreement to Parliament, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mamadi Gobeh-Kamara highlighted the background information on the agreement relative to the socio-economic development of both nations. She said the bilateral relations would strengthen mutual respect, technical and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Both the Acting Leader of the Opposition, Ibrahim Ben Kargbo and Leader of Government Business, Mathew Sahr Nyuma welcomed the initiative for the bilateral relationship with the United Arab Emirates and highlighted the economic benefits that would be derived by the two countries.
