The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyer, has on Monday 12 December 2022 made another appearance before the principal magistrate of the Freetown Magistrate Court No.1, Magistrate Mark Ngegba, and the matter was adjourned for ruling on whether the sitting Mayor will be set free or otherwise.

Mayor Aki-Sawyer is before the court to answer to two counts charges of obstruction of police duty contrary to section 39 of the Police Act of 1964 and disorderly behaviour contrary to section 12(b) of the Public Order Act of 1965.

Court records show that the mayor on Saturday 17 September 2022 at the Lungi Airport Police Division in Lungi, Port Loko District, obstructed Detective Sergeant 7966, Richard Junior Caulker, and Corporal 12225 Fanta Fofanah while executing their lawful duties.

Shortly after the matter was mentioned, state prosecutor Yusuf Isaac Sesay submitted his response to the no case submission made by defence counsel Joseph Fitz-Gerald Kamara on behalf of Mayor Aki-Sawyer.

The mayor was present in court but her lawyer was absent. She was informed by lawyer Melron Nicole Wilson that lawyer Kamara was absent because he was bereaved.

Magistrate Ngegba adjourned the matter to 23 December 2022 for ruling.
