A Million Man Match

By Joe Tucker

The main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) will end their final rally in the Western Area for the March 7, 2018 elections in Freetown today, Monday 26th February 2018.

According to the National Electoral Commission (NEC) timetable, all political parties have four (4) days to campaign in every district and Monday, the 26th February, has been slated as the final day for the party to campaign in the Western Area.

Abubakarr Joe Sesay,  who doubles as  member of the Media Committee of the Party and Editor for the party’s mouthpiece, the Unity Now, has  confirmed  that they still have other areas where their campaign will continue, but according to him, Monday is their last day of campaigning in the Western Area, Freetown.

This is why we are going to organize a massive rally as a show of strength, because the past three days we have been basically engaging  in house-to-house campaign, meeting our supporters in strategic locations on a spot visit and more…” said Mr. Sesay.

He assured all that the rally is going to be well organized with supporters coming out from different areas in both the east west and central parts of the city, including the Western Area rural communities.

Mr. Sesay stated that, according to their flag bearer, Monday’s rally has been dubbed a One million man march.

During the rally, the message will be changed and total transformation of the lives of the people and hope that all is not lost because all Sierra Leoneans now are yearning for change. This will be the key message of the flag bearer,   Mr. Sesay went on.

On Security for the rally, the Unity Editor said that the campaign is going to be very peaceful as adequate security measures have been put in place.

“Prior to the start of campaigning they have assigned armed police officers to various flag bearers, including ours. At the moment, our presidential candidate has two, one close protection at the vehicle where he sits and the other OSD personnel for escort, in addition to his own personal body guards.”

He also said if the police decide to put more security and add security measures because of the incident in Kamalo that will be an added advantage, especially when their flag bearer is going to be the next president of the country, Sesay boasted

Abubakar Sesay concluded by saying that his final message was that they believe in peace and want to maintain peace for the people of Sierra Leone. That is why, according to him, they have not taken the laws into their hands by retaliating in spite of the high spate of violence that has taken place involving their supporters.

“We have catalogued all these incidences and reported them to the PPRC as they are in charge of regulating the conduct of political parties. I am calling on supporters to conduct themselves as ambassadors of the SLPP,” Sesay urged.

He said they should come out in their numbers to send a peaceful message to the APC that their time is up and to the International Communities that the SLPP has all it takes to form the next government.
