Ahmed Jalloh, a Sierra Leonean, residing in the East of Freetown has been named as one of the individuals declared wanted by the Sierra Leone police in connection with the unrest that engulfed parts of the capital, Freetown on the 10th August, 2022; in the aftermath of nationwide violent protests that rocked the city.

The protests, which began as an expressions of public frustration over economic hardship, rising cost of living  and dissatisfaction with governance, drew hundreds of citizens out the streets. Many demonstrators said they were exercising their democratic rights and to make their voices heard. However, the protest was met with a heavy security response from police and military personnel, leading to deadly clashes, widespread arrests, and destruction of properties.

Ahmed Jalloh, a known supporter of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC), was accused by the government of participating in violent acts during the protest. According to statements from the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) secretariat, he was allegedly among protesters who threw rocks, set ablaze facilities including the a police post in the eastern part of Freetown.

Authorities further alleged that Jalloh was part of a group chanting anti-government slogans, including “Bio must go,” in direct opposition to President Julius Maada Bio. Many have described the protest as politically motivated and have accused the opposition of orchestrating chaos under the guise of civil demonstration.

Jalloh’s entire family is well known to be affiliated with the APC, and his brother reportedly serves as a youth chairman within the party; a connection, some observers believe, may have increased scrutiny on him following the protest.

After August 10, videos went viral on social media, showing faces of suspected protesters with names attached, as authorities intensified efforts to identify and apprehend those believed to be responsible for the violence. Ahmed Jalloh’s name and portrait were reportedly included among those circulated as he was among those declared wanted by the police.

Since then, individuals named in connection with the protest have reported harassment, threats, and fear for their personal safety. According to sources close to Jalloh, these pressures compelled him to flee Sierra Leone to avoid possible arrest and  mistreatment.

Jalloh is reported to be currently on the run and the government is said to have placed a huge sum aside for anyone who may provide information that will lead to his arrest and prosecution.
