“Compelling Need to Engage Parliament on Repeal of 1965 POA” -Rado Swarray

The Minister of Information and Communications ,Rado Rahman Swarray, has told journalist in Freetown that there is a compelling need to engage Parliament and other critical stakeholders to get their support towards repealing the 65 year-old Criminal Libel law.
Mohamed Rahman Swarray made this disclosure while responding to concerns from journalists that the Leader of Government Business in Parliament has disclosed that the House will not pass the repeal of the 1965 Public Order Act into law.
Hon. Tunis declared to journalists quite recently that lawmakers are calling on government to strengthen the Independent Media Commission (IMC) rather than calling for a repeal of the law.
President Bio’s Government has early in September announced that Cabinet has unanimously endorsed the repeal of the 1965 Public Order Act and that the Act was now waiting for Parliamentary approval.
President Bio has addressed the United Nations General Assembly that his government is almost on the verge of repealing the law so as to provide unrestricted access for journalists to do their job and also allow private sector investment into the development of the media.
