The Sierra Leone Teachers Union has in less than twenty four hours condemned in the strongest possible time the treatment meted out yesterday on its teachers and heads of schools by the Sierra Leone Police and the Anti-Corruption Commission.
The SLTU release notes that, they are concerned that the dignity and human rights of these teachers have been violated by these institutions.
The Union states categorically clear that, there is certainly no law in Sierra Leone that permits suspected persons to be publicly molested and put on public display at the Cotton Tree /Law Court Building as it happened on September 9th, 2019.
The Union while espousing its commitment to the fight against examination cheating noted that, they will strongly resist any attempt by any institution to unlawfully molest teachers or bring the dignity of the profession.
The release concluded by calling on teachers across the country to stay calm and allow for the due process of the law to take its course.
The issue of publicly parading teachers and heads of schools caught in examination related activities by the ACC had received mixed feelings in Freetown.
Some sections of the public believes it is high time that, we put the issue of human rights aside and deal with an issue that is almost denting the credibility of our country’s Educational system.
Others are of the opinion that Sierra Leone is part of the international Community and a signatory to a number of conventions including the African Charter for Human and Peoples Rights and hence the action by the ACC yesterday has violated these protocols.
