A civil rights activist, and senior media practitioner in Kenema, James Jamil Fatorma, has alerted the public about future disaster threats to be caused in Kenema as a result of negative human activities .
Speaking to our reporter in Kenema, James Jamil Fatorma said, they have launched a campaign against illegal activities going on at disaster prone areas especially the deforestation of the Kamboi forest as it poses security threat to all.
He said,government institutions including the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Infrastructure and the District Forestry Office including land owning families are part of the problem.
Fatorma stated that there are lots of illegal operations going on and there was need for government to take prompt action by discouraging people from constructing dwelling houses at disaster prone areas.
The civil rights activist, maintained that it is now time for sensitization while also urging the need for government officials to go in to action by enforcing the laws to avoid a serious disaster , adding that, the water catchment areas of the Sierra Leone Water Company are under threat due to stone mining ,charcoal and bush burning among other things .
He further pointed out that, it is time for the Resident Minister and other authorities to take a robust action against those building on the hill side and swamps citing the mudslide disaster that occurred in Freetown and called on all to support the campaign.
