In Makeni… Boy Escaped Poro Society Initiation

The hierarchy of the Poro Society membership in Makeni, Bombali District, and Northern Sierra Leone is in search of a boy who they said is the heir apparent to his father’s position in the secret society bush.

According to one of the elders of the Poro Society Council Pa Yamba Farray, Lamine Diallo’s father was a staunch member of the Poro Council and had before his death identified Lamine Diallo as his replacement in the leadership of the council.

Pa Yamba Farray continued that it is part of the tradition of the Poro society that there should be no vacuum in the leadership of the council except in a situation   where deceased leaders had no male child, but where he had a male child then he must identified him before his death. He stated in strongest of terms that they will pursue Lamine Diallo until he is initiated into the Poro society and replace his late father into the council irrespective of Lamine being on the run since 2014 to this 2018.   The gory looking old man concluded that except the boy fled Sierra Leone, but hence he is within Sierra Leone, they will pursue him until he become a stakeholder in the council  like his late father.

Young people spoken to told this writer that Lamine Diallo is never a fan of the Poro society and he was a fierce critique of the practices of the society. They also said the initiation process of an heir apparent is quite different from initiation of ordinary members. The young members of the society confine to this writer that Lamine Diallo took the right decision in fleeing because there were chances for him to lose his life if taken to the society bush for initiation because he suppose to be the replacement of his father in the council and he had been speaking bad things against the society not knowing he is the one his late father identified to the elders as his replacement in the elders council.

Sources are that Lamine Diallo has fled Sierra Leone since 2014 to seek refuge and safety to another country.
