In Parliament… KKY Lambasts S/Leone Judiciary

By Ragan M. Conteh

The Leader of National Grand Coalition (NGC) in Parliament, Hon. Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella recently remarked in the august body their party did not have any trust in the Sierra Leone Judiciary.

He made the remarks during his contribution to the debate for the approval of the Returning Officer and Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

He informed the House that some of them would want to take cases to the Court of Law but they lack trust in the criminal justice system of the country, adding that a lot of political and others cases are in the shelves of the law courts unattended.

Hon. Yumkella disclosed that as a political party, they have prepared some recommendations which they intend to take to the court and the Chief Justice for judicial reforms.

According to the NGC Leader, the Sierra Leone judicial system requires complete overhauling in order to restore sanity in it, whilst he admonished the newly approved NEC Chairman, Mr. Konneh to make the institution very credible and to strictly follow the 103 recommendations of the March, 2018 election observers in Sierra Leone.

Hon. Alhaji Dr. Yumkella alluded to some instances when his polling agents were thrown out of polling centers during the 2018 national elections, citing the alleged electoral fraud at Constituency 110 and Ward 210.

The NGC Leader averred that the new NEC Chairman was inheriting an institution that was overwhelmingly discredited and therefore urged him to do the needful.
