The acting leader of the main opposition, All People’s Congress (APC), Hon. Daniel Brima Koroma representing Koinadugu District, has accused Kingho Company for allegedly abandoning and sacking a Sierra Leonean when he was involved in a severe accident while on duty for the said company.
He said the incident reportedly occurred at Bumbuna in Tonkolili District. The minister said this during the presentation of a bill by the Minister of Labour in Parliament.
Hon. Koroma said the accident was so serious the worker lost both legs which were eventually amputated. He said when his co-workers attempted to put him in one of the company’s vehicles, the boss refused saying he didn’t want them to mess up his vehicle.
He said it was so disheartening that the labourer was convened to the hospital in one of the company’s trucks. He said it is good for trade union to represent labourers, adding it is rather unfortunate that some of the trade unionists are always supporting employers over the employees.
As a result, Hon. Daniel Brima Koroma encouraged all Members of Parliament (MPs) to support and speedily approve the bill into law.
The Deputy Leader of Government Business, Hon. Bashiru Silikie representing Bo District, thanked the Minister of Labour and Social Employment, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, for presenting the bill entitled “The Industrial Relations and Trade Union Act 2023”.
Hon. Silikie acknowledged that as politicians they are occupying transitional offices and therefore they should be cautious when making and passing laws, emphasising that they should do it judiciously.
The Minister of Labour and Social Employment, Mohamed Rahman Swaray singled out Gold Tree Sierra Leone as one of the companies in Sierra Leone where Sierra Leoneans are suffering in the hands of foreigners.
