The Sierra Leone Police have declared Mohamed Kamara, a businessman formerly residing at 15 Levuma Beach Road, Goderich, wanted in connection with investigations into a cache of arms and ammunition discovered in an abandoned water well in Freetown.

Police sources confirmed that Kamara is being sought for allegedly failing to provide a formal statement regarding the discovery of the weapons, which reportedly included AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and other ammunition. A senior police officer told this publication that investigations are ongoing and that a reward of Twenty Thousand New Leones (Le 20,000) has been announced for information leading to Kamara’s arrest.

According to multiple sources, Kamara, the owner of For-Wells Company, allegedly discovered the weapons while carrying out repair work on an abandoned water well. The sources said Kamara reported the find to the police, who later visited the site and removed the weapons. Investigators reportedly concluded at the time that the arms had been concealed in the well by unidentified individuals.

However, the matter has since taken a political dimension, with allegations that Kamara has been linked to opposition political parties following the discovery. Sources allege that after the weapons were taken to the police station, Kamara was approached by Vandy Lahai, also known as “Hungary Lion,” who is described by sources as the leader of a government-affiliated group. The sources claim Kamara was pressured to reveal who hired him to work on the well and was threatened when he could not provide such information. These allegations have not been independently verified.

Community sources further alleged that Kamara has been targeted because of his family’s political history. His late father, Santigie Kamara, popularly known as Pa Santigie, was reportedly a supporter of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC). Pa Santigie, a security officer, was abducted and killed after the 2018 general elections, according to family and community accounts. He was said to have been actively involved in APC campaigning during the 2018 elections.

Another source, who requested anonymity for security reasons, alleged that Kamara’s mother’s house was set ablaze and that Kamara was later declared wanted amid threats to his life. The source further claimed that the discovery of the weapons disrupted an alleged plan to implicate an APC member in a coup attempt. These claims have not been confirmed by authorities.

Sources also stated that in July 2024, Kamara was questioned by police after reporting the weapons discovery. Allegations circulating within the community suggest that the investigation is being used to target him due to his father’s political affiliations.

When this reporter attempted to locate Kamara for comment, a community source said his whereabouts were unknown. The source claimed that following reports of an attack on his family home on 27 July 2024, Kamara left the area and has not been seen since. She further alleged that individuals believed to be ruling party supporters continue to search for him and have issued threats against his life.

Contacted for comment, a senior police officer confirmed that the police are actively searching for Mohamed Kamara in relation to the weapons investigation. The officer declined to comment on the political allegations surrounding the case, stating only that the matter remains under active investigation.

Police have urged anyone with information on Kamara’s whereabouts to come forward as investigations continue.
