The National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone (NOC-SLE), in collaboration with TAFISA and Nike, wrapped up the first phase of the Girls Positive and Safe Coaching Pathway, last week at the OlympAfrica Center, Goderich in Freetown.
25 top senior coaches (15 female, 10 male) from various sporting disciplines were targeted in a series of five two day workshops across Makeni, Portloko, Bo, Kenema, and Freetown, were trained how to coach women, use sport to prevent harmful behavior and build confidence and trust in female athletes.
The colorful closing ceremony which also marked the end of Day 2 of the training Freetown was inspiring and energetic finish to the first phase of the project, with training sessions led by Madam Aminata Turay, Abu Bakarr Bangura and Coach Sorie Kamara.
During the first session, Madam Aminata Turay led an open group talks where coaches shared the real challenges they face when coaching girls. It was a safe space where everyone felt respected, listened to, and supported.
In second session 2: “Creating Safe & Positive Coaching Spaces”, Abu Bakarr Bangura delivered an inspiring session focused on how coaches can help girls feel safe, valued, and confident. Simple ideas were shared on how to build trust, encourage positivity, and make every girl feel included.
While in the third session: “Role-Playing Real Coaching Situations”, Coach Sorie Kamara brought energy and fun to the room with active role-plays. Coaches acted out real-life coaching moments and learned how to handle them with care and confidence. There was laughter, learning, and strong teamwork!
The Closing Ceremony which marks a grand ending of the series of five two day workshops, the team hosted a simple but memorable closing ceremony to celebrate everyone’s hard work and dedication.

All speakers gave encouraging messages, highlighting the importance of safe and positive coaching for girls in sports. It was a proud moment as certificates were handed out, and we captured the day with group photos.
Freetown has truly set the pace with its energy, honesty, and teamwork. We’re proud of every coach who joined us and look forward to what’s next as the journey continues!
The Closing Ceremony was climaxed by presentation of certificates of participation given to all.
