PRESIDENT MAADA BIO WILL BE SIERRA LEONE’S LAST DISHONEST PRESIDENT

Sierra Leoneans have learnt and experienced a lot and can’t accept it more of its sort again. They have developed a new consciousness that is resistant to deception and dishonesty. From the congested ghettos of Freetown to the neglected villages of Koinadugu, from the educated youth in universities to the silent market women in Kenema, one truth is becoming clear: the era of blind loyalty to politicians is over. And at the center of this awakening is President Julius Maada Bio, whose tenure is increasingly viewed not just as a disappointment, but as a defining lesson in political deception. His presidency may well be remembered as the final straw – the last time Sierra Leoneans will allow themselves to be fooled.

The Mask of Free Quality Education:

When President Bio campaigned in 2018, he branded himself a reformer – a retired military man turned democrat, a man of discipline, a visionary who would restore dignity to a broken nation. He promised “Free Quality Education,” “Feed Salone,” and a clampdown on corruption. Sierra Leoneans believed him. Many voted with hope in their hearts and dreams for a better tomorrow.

But years into his presidency, that hope has been replaced with bitter disillusionment. The so-called Free Quality Education is now a shadow of its promise – underfunded, politicized, and marred by crumbling infrastructure and unpaid teachers. Students still sit on floors, schools lack textbooks, and “free” remains a word on banners, not a reality in the classroom.

The Reality of Hunger and Hardship:

The “Feed Salone” program, another flagship promise, has become a national irony. Food prices are soaring. The average Sierra Leonean struggles to afford even a basic daily meal. Instead of reducing poverty, this administration has overseen its  multiplication. Youth unemployment is rampant. Civil servants are demoralized. The health sector is in crisis. And the economy is spiraling under heavy taxation, inflation, and poor fiscal discipline.

Sierra Leoneans are now asking the hard question: Was this what we voted for?

President Bio promised transformation, but many feel they have received betrayal. And this betrayal has sparked a realization that may change the trajectory of the nation forever.

No More Trust for Political Gimmicks:

For decades, Sierra Leoneans have endured a cycle of deception: governments making grand promises only to enrich themselves while citizens suffer. But something different is happening now. A new generation – bold, informed, and globally connected – is saying “enough is enough.” They no longer buy into empty speeches, staged ribbon-cutting ceremonies, or last-minute election-time giveaways.

This generation has seen through the political drama. They understand that true development cannot coexist with corruption, that unity cannot thrive under tribal favoritism, and that democracy cannot flourish where elections are rigged and dissent is criminalized.

President Bio may be the last president to successfully ride into power on promises only to deliver excuses. Sierra Leoneans are no longer naïve. They are watching, remembering, and organizing.

The Broken Promises Are Too Many:

From the Lungi Bridge that never materialized to the promise of electricity across the country, from the failed fight against kush and drugs to the silencing of critical media voices – the broken promises of Bio’s regime are countless. Worse, those who dare to speak truth are labeled enemies, arrested, or pushed into exile. The truth cannot be imprisoned any more.

The people have seen through the theatrics. They now understand that governance is not about speeches but about results, not about symbolism but about substance. And as the years of Bio’s rule unfold, more and more Sierra Leoneans are awakening to the brutal truth: they were deceived – and they won’t let it happen again.

Sierra Leoneans Are Taking Back Their Voice:

Across social media platforms, community radio stations, and street corners, voices are rising. Ordinary citizens are fact-checking political statements, rejecting tribal divisions, and calling out injustice. Civic activism is on the rise. From university students to diaspora advocates, a collective resistance is growing – not necessarily partisan, but patriotic. It is a resistance that enforces the idealism that emphasizes: “Never again!”

Never again will we be tricked by flashy slogans. Never again will we trust men over manifestos. Never again will we let leaders divide us by tribe, region, or religion.

The End of Political Deception Begins Now

President Bio’s government has unwittingly sparked a civic awakening. While his administration may continue in office for now, the tide has turned. He has become the face of failed promises, a symbol of what happens when leadership is driven by ego and entitlement rather than service and sacrifice.

But there lies the blessing. His failures have become a national mirror. The people now know what they should never again accept. Bio may have deceived Sierra Leoneans once, but no future leader will succeed in doing the same. The masses are wiser now. The old tricks will no longer work.

A New Political Era Is Dawning:

As Sierra Leone looks to the future, the people are determined to chart a new path – one defined not by party symbols or tribal rhetoric, but by competence, vision, and integrity. The next leader of Sierra Leone will not win by default. They will have to earn it. They will be scrutinized. Their records will be examined. Their words will be weighed.

And should they attempt to follow in Bio’s footsteps of deception, they too will face the same rejection. This is because Sierra Leoneans have arisen from their deep slumber. They have awakened – and they refuse to be lied to again.

A Nation That Has Learnt the Hard Way:

President Julius Maada Bio’s rule will go down in history as a painful but necessary turning point. Now is a period of betrayal that birthed enlightenment. He will be remembered not only for his unfulfilled promises, but also as the last president to successfully deceive a nation that had grown too trusting.

No More! Never Again!

Sierra Leone has learnt its lesson – and it’s one that will shape every election, every government, and every leader from now on. The people are no longer waiting for a savior. They are now searching for a servant; and that, more than anything, is the beginning of Sierra Leone’s transformation.
