Prosecution Stalls Palo’s Wife’s Case

By Janet A Sesay

Defence Counsel G. Conteh, who is defending the wife of Major (Rtd) Alfred Palo Conteh – Isata Saccoh at the Magistrate’s Court No. 1 on Pademba Road, Freetown, yesterday made an application for the accused to be discharged following the conspicuous absence of the prosecution to prosecute his client.

The accused Isata Saccoh was charged with conspiracy to commit a felony contrary to law, and unlawful possession of unlicensed small arms.

It was also alleged that on 20th March 2020, the accused conspired to facilitate the escape of her husband Major (Rtd) Alfred Palo Conteh from the Pademba Road Male Correctional Centre.

Shortly after the matter was mentioned before Magistrate Hannah Bonnie, the State Prosecutor Yusuf Sesay was conspicuously absent from court.

Defense Counsel G. Conteh observed that the prosecution was making no effort with regards the matter, noting that it is unfair for the accused to be attending court without the prosecution that levied the charges against her appearing.

The learned lawyer therefore made an application of discharge of his client, adding that his client will appear in court whenever the state is ready to move on with the case.

Magistrate Bonnie in response to the defence counsel’s application said she held the view that the prosecution would make progress in the matter, stating that she will however admonish the prosecution in a way of writing for her to know whether or not they are proceeding with the matter.

The accused was granted bail in the sum of Le200million, two sureties in like sum and the sureties should be responsible Sierra Leoneans residing in Freetown.

The sureties should also own properties in Freetown worth Le1billion with little deeds and validation certificates, and the accused should also surrender to the court all her travelling documents and bail should be approved by the Master and Registrar.

The matter comes up on 3rd July 2020.
