Sierra Leone Tug of War National team is aiming for brilliance in the upcoming men’s and mixed team events at the International Outdoor Tug of War tournament slated for Dublin, Ireland, from May 31st to June 2nd, 2024.
With the rigorous training at the Lumley beach, Team Sierra Leone will be hoping to not only participate but also to compete and secure medals in their debut at International Outdoor Tug of War Tournament.
According to the National Head Coach Sonny Johnson, he is satisfied with the team’s dedication and commitment, adding that the athletes have improved greatly since last year.
He further highlighted that over the past weeks the training programme includes six rigorous sessions per week, encompassing practical exercises, and theoretical sessions to familiarise the athletes with the rules of the game, and gym workouts twice a week.
‘We have been training well this year, and have improved greatly since last year. We aim to ensure they are in peak condition for the event. We have picked up a number of new members over the course of the past months or so, so it is great to be in a position to be challenging for in our debut in the International Outdoor Tug of War Tournament.
Should we win medal in the tournament, this year would be a very special moment for Sierra Leone because it is the first time we are competing in the global platform. But we know that we have to face some tough competitions out there and hopefully we will be close enough to make a good challenge for the top spots,’ Coach Johnson noted.
He also confirmed that the team will be camped in Bo City before departing for Ireland, with the aim of fostering focus and unity among the athletes as they gear up to compete for medals in their inaugural international competition.
