Sierra Leone Aquatics Coaches Certification Course Begins Today

Sierra Leone Aquatics with support from World Aquatics and Olympic Solidarity through the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone will be commencing Coaches Certification Course starting from today, Friday, 6th September, to Sunday, 8th September, 2024 in Freetown.

The face-to-face Coaches Certification courses for swimming and other aquatic sports initiative aims to uplift the standards of coaching, providing participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to nurture future swimming talents in Sierra Leone.

According to Reginald Brian O Sawyerr, the Public Relation Officer (PRO) 1 of Sierra Leone Aquatic, the course will be facilitated by a Swimming Expert from South Africa, Eugene Da Ponta, adding that it will bring together aspiring and current coaches from across the country.

He noted that 18 participants will involve and that a curriculum designed by seasoned professionals, the program is set to cover a comprehensive range of topics, including advanced swimming techniques, safety protocols, athletes’ management, and effective coaching strategies tailored for both beginners and advanced swimmers.

Sawyerr continued that one of the unique aspects of the course is that it emphasis on practical hands-on training, and that participants having the opportunity to engage in real-time coaching scenarios, allowing them to apply the theories they learn in a controlled environment.

This approach, he said is designed to ensure that the coaches are not only knowledgeable but also capable of implementing their skills effectively in real-world situations.

The PRO highlighted that the Federation has also enlisted the expertise of international coaching professionals, who will share their insights and experiences, offering a global perspective on coaching practices, which will blend of local and international expertise is expected to enhance the quality of coaching in Sierra Leone, aligning it with international standards.

In addition to improving coaching standards, he also stated that this initiative is also seen as a step towards promoting the importance of water safety and encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle among the youth of Sierra Leone. As drowning remains a significant risk in many parts of the country, having well-trained coaches can play a critical role in educating the public on safe swimming practices.

After finishing the online course and attaining the pass marks required to be part of the Face-to-Face course to be conducted by Eugene Da Ponte.
