Thirty-sixty newly trained and qualified State Registered Nurses (SRN), set 44 of the Faculty of Nursing in Freetown, have received orientation for deployment in various health facilities across the country on Wednesday May 8, 2018.
The orientation was conducted by the Directorate of Nursing and Midwifery Services in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation.
Speaking at the orientation ceremony held in the conference hall of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, Matron Hossinatu Koroma, reminded the State Registered Nurses about the Civil Service Code, Regulations and Rules, and the Code of Ethics for Nurses and Midwives, stating that they are accountable to the public and the Ministry to promote professional code of practice, conduct and ethics in their various duty stations. She disclosed that what they at the Directorate are doing is to implement the law and the laws that they implement are enshrined in these two books, the Civil Service Code, Regulations and Rules, and the Code of Ethics for Nurses and Midwives.
On the issue of transfer, Matron Hossinatu Koroma said the Civil Service Code, Regulations and Rules states in Rule 5.20 that any officer may at any time and without his or her consent be transferred from his or her current duty station to another.
She opined that they should be able to detect and manage emergencies, be a team player and a builder with the required competencies, as well as promoting regular clinical services, and timely referrals.
The Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer congratulated the newly State Registered Nurses on behalf of the Directorate of Nursing and Midwifery Services for their successful completion of their courses.
Congratulating the newly qualified State Registered Nurses, the Director of Human Resource for Health, Mr. Edward Kwame Yankson, underscored the importance of the orientation, stating that the Ministry of Health is not responsible for giving out pin codes, but the Human Resource Management Office (HRMO) through recommendation from the Ministry.
He appealed to the SRNs to be always present at work in their duty stations and to desist from dual employment in any institutions, which, he said, is an offence by law and anyone caught will face the full penalty of the law.
In another similar development, forty-seven (47) State Certified Midwives, set 32 of the School of Midwifery in Freetown, have also received orientation for development in various health facilities across the country on Thursday May 10, 2018 to help reduce maternal mortality.
