Don’t Doubt APC’s Comeback

All People Congress (APC)

The All People’s Congress (APC) can not be underestimated or doubted anymore and the possibility of their resurgence may be overlooking an important lesson of democratic politics. Resilience often precedes revival.

The APC is not merely another political party in Sierra Leone’s history. Since its founding in 1960, it has played a significant role in shaping the nation’s political landscape. Over the decades, it has experienced periods of remarkable success, difficult defeats, internal challenges, and political renewal. Like many long-standing political movements around the world, its survival through changing political environments demonstrates an enduring organizational structure and a loyal support base.

Following its departure from government in 2018, many observers predicted that the APC would struggle to remain politically relevant. Yet the party has continued to attract considerable public attention and maintain support across different parts of the country. While internal disagreements and organizational reforms have presented challenges, these experiences have also encouraged reflection on leadership, strategy, and party unity.

One of the greatest strengths of any opposition party in a democracy is its opportunity to reconnect with the people. Time outside government often allows parties to reassess policies, listen more closely to citizens’ concerns, and develop new ideas that respond to changing national priorities. For the APC, this period offers an opportunity not simply to seek power again, but to demonstrate how it would address the issues that matter most to Sierra Leoneans.

Many citizens continue to express concerns about unemployment, the rising cost of living, inflation, electricity supply, healthcare, education, agriculture, and opportunities for young people. These concerns are not unique to one administration; they are long-standing national challenges that every government has faced to varying degrees. Any political party seeking public confidence must present practical, credible, and achievable solutions rather than relying solely on criticism of its opponents.

The APC’s future will depend not only on its history but also on its ability to inspire confidence in the future. Sierra Leone’s electorate has become increasingly attentive to issues of governance, accountability, transparency, and economic management. Voters are likely to evaluate political parties not only by campaign promises but also by the quality of their policies, the credibility of their candidates, and their commitment to national development.

Youth engagement represents another critical factor. Sierra Leone has a young and energetic population whose aspirations include employment, entrepreneurship, quality education, and technological advancement. Any successful political movement must place young people at the centre of its vision. If the APC can effectively engage youth, encourage innovation, and promote policies that expand opportunities, it may strengthen its appeal to a new generation of voters.

Equally important is the need for national unity. Sierra Leone’s democracy is strongest when political competition remains peaceful, respectful, and focused on ideas rather than division. A successful comeback for any political party should not be measured simply by electoral victory but by its commitment to inclusive governance, respect for democratic institutions, and service to all citizens regardless of political affiliation.

The phrase, “Don’t underestimate the APC,” should therefore be understood not merely as a partisan slogan but as a reminder of how democratic politics works. Political fortunes change. Parties evolve. Leadership develops. Public expectations shift. The history of democracies around the world demonstrates that opposition parties frequently return to government after periods of renewal and reform. Whether that happens depends on public confidence, organizational discipline, persuasive policies, and the ability to connect with voters.

However, a successful comeback cannot rely on nostalgia alone. Citizens increasingly demand concrete plans for economic growth, job creation, improved healthcare, better infrastructure, stronger educational systems, agricultural development, and good governance. Electoral success in modern democracies requires competence, credibility, and a clear vision for national progress.

The APC therefore faces both an opportunity and a responsibility. The opportunity lies in presenting itself as a viable alternative capable of addressing the country’s pressing challenges. The responsibility lies in demonstrating that it has learned from past experiences, strengthened its internal democracy, and developed policies that respond to the needs of today’s Sierra Leone rather than those of yesterday.

For supporters, optimism is a powerful source of motivation. For undecided voters, evidence and performance matter most. Ultimately, the decision belongs to the people of Sierra Leone, whose votes determine the direction of the nation’s democracy. Political parties earn public trust through consistent engagement, responsible leadership, and practical solutions that improve citizens’ lives.

As the country continues its democratic journey, no serious political observer should dismiss the possibility of significant political change. The APC remains an established force within Sierra Leonean politics, and its future will depend on how effectively it organizes, communicates its vision, and responds to the aspirations of the electorate.

So, don’t underestimate the APC. Whether one supports the party or not, democratic history teaches that political comebacks are always possible. Great expectations, however, must be matched by great ideas, principled leadership, and a genuine commitment to serving the people. If the APC can combine experience with renewal, vision with action, and ambition with accountability, it may well position itself as a formidable contender in Sierra Leone’s evolving political landscape.

In the end, democracy is strengthened when every political party competes on the strength of its ideas, respects the will of the people, and works toward a more prosperous, peaceful, and united Sierra Leone. That is the standard by which any comeback—whether by the APC or any other party—will ultimately be judged.
