INTRODUCTION:

Mrs. Zainab Melvina Omoyinmi (née Tholley) stands as a shining example of visionary leadership, service, and commitment to education and community development. A distinguished social worker, educator, and advocate for social justice, she has devoted her life to empowering people and strengthening institutions both in Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom.

Born and raised in Sierra Leone, Mrs. Omoyinmi’s educational journey began at the Guadalupe Secondary Vocational School in Lunsar, Port Loko District, where she attained her GCE Ordinary Level qualifications. She later pursued teacher training at Milton Margai Teachers College in Freetown, earning a Higher Teachers Certificate (Secondary), which laid the foundation for her enduring passion for education and human development.

Driven by a desire to serve vulnerable communities, she furthered her studies in the United Kingdom, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Social Work from Brunel University and a Master’s Degree in International Social Work and Community Development Studies from the University of East London. With over two decades of professional experience, she has served in various senior and management positions within local authorities across the UK, specializing in safeguarding adults. She currently serves as a Consultant Lead Practitioner in Safeguarding Adults and works independently as a Consultant Best Interest Assessor under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.

A COMMITED DIASPORA PATRIOT:

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mrs. Omoyinmi has remained deeply committed to the Sierra Leonean community in the diaspora. She has provided exemplary leadership as President of the Guadalupe Old Girls Association UK and, most notably, as Chairlady of the Milton Margai Alumni UK (MMAUK) from January 2021 to January 2026.

HER TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP AT MILTON MARGAI ALUMNI-UK:

During her tenure as Chairlady, Mrs. Omoyinmi spearheaded reforms and initiatives that elevated the profile and effectiveness of MMAUK both at home and abroad. She strengthened bilateral relations with the administration of Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) and instituted sustainable structures to ensure the growth and continuity of the association.

Recognizing the growing importance of digital education and the challenges confronting MMTU, she championed the establishment of the Milton Margai Alumni -United Kingdom (MMAUK) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Project, following consultations with the university administration, which unanimously endorsed support for the ICT Department because of its cross-cutting relevance to all faculties.

Under her leadership, and with the support of the general membership and the Finance Team, the project was designed to address critical technological deficiencies affecting teaching and learning. Her vision was anchored on four key objectives:

√ To bridge the digital divide by providing essential technological resources to students who lack personal computers;

√ To support online learning, in response to the evolving demands of digital education accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic;

√ To enhance teaching standards through the use of modern and interactive digital tools; and

√ To strengthen institutional capacity to attract academic collaboration and partnerships.

The initiative which was structured in four phases, seeks to install computers and internet-enabled devices in lecture rooms, train lecturers in digital learning techniques, establish a centralized learning management system, and create a technical support mechanism for maintenance and assistance.
