OVER DRUG TRAFFICKING IN SIERRA LEONE… EUROPEAN UNION RAISES ALARM

The European Union is quite agitated over the alarming rate of drug trafficking associated with Sierra Leone and through its Ambassador in the country, has expressed serious concern over alleged drug trafficking activities linked to Sierra Leone, warning that the issue could damage the country’s international reputation, weaken investor confidence, and undermine ongoing development efforts.

The EU Resident Ambassador was seaking during the celebration of Europe Day 2026 in Freetown. Ambassador Jacek Jankowski, emphasized that the fight against narcotics trafficking has become a matter of urgent international concern requiring decisive action and sustained cooperation.

He spoke in the presence and full hearing of President Julius Maada Bio, government officials, diplomats, and development partners at the ceremony marking 50 years of EU-Sierra Leone relations.

Ambassador Jankowski revealed that reports surrounding drug-related activities in Sierra Leone were attracting increasing international scrutiny.

He therefore cautioned that such ugly developments; if not nipped in the board as early as possible, risk affecting country’s standing among international partners and investors and he called for adequate actions to be taken to addressed the menacing issue.

“The growing international attention on narcotics-related activities could undermine trust and investor confidence,” the Ambassador warned, while reaffirming that the European Union remains committed to supporting Sierra Leonean authorities in combating transnational organized crime and strengthening law enforcement cooperation.

The Ambassador stressed that the EU’s concerns were being raised “as a partner, not as a critic,” noting that Sierra Leone and the European Union share common interests in promoting stability, security, transparency, and economic growth.
