FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

We Demand Swift and Undiluted Answers on the State House Fire Incident

Freetown, Sierra Leone, April 12, 2025 – The Electoral Justice Campaign expresses grave concern and deep suspicion over the recent fire incident at State House—the most secure and symbolically significant building in the Republic of Sierra Leone. This is the first time in our nation’s history that such a bizarre and troubling event occurred at our executive governance’s epicenter.

We unequivocally demand swift, honest, and undiluted answers from the illegitimate regime currently presiding in Freetown. The fire, which reportedly lasted over four hours, raises serious questions about the integrity of national security protocols and emergency response systems.

Given the presence of modern fire safety equipment both inside and outside the building, and considering the close proximity of the National Fire Force to State House, it is inconceivable that this blaze was allowed to rage unchecked for such an extended period.

We believe that at this crucial juncture in our political history, every incident—particularly one of this magnitude—must be viewed through the lens of electoral justice. The legitimacy of this regime remains under national and international scrutiny, and the connection between the lack of transparency in governance and the absence of electoral accountability is becoming increasingly evident.

The Electoral Justice Campaign stands with the people of Sierra Leone in demanding:

  1. A full and independent investigation into the cause and response to the State House fire;
  2. Immediate public disclosure of preliminary findings;
  3. Clarification on the possible loss or compromise of state records or sensitive information;
  4. Assurance of the safety and preservation of all public properties and constitutional institutions.

Sierra Leone deserves leadership that is accountable, transparent, and truly representative of the will of its people. We reiterate our call for electoral justice as a cornerstone for peace, progress, and national integrity.
