Lunsar is set to come alive with the roar of wheels and the spirit of competition as it prepares to host its first-ever Cycling Festival on April 18–19, marking a significant milestone in the development of the sport in Sierra Leone.
The landmark two-day event, organised by the team behind the popular Tour de Lunsar, promises an exciting showcase of speed, endurance and technical brilliance, bringing together cyclists from across the country for what is expected to be a thrilling national spectacle.
The festival will focus on criterium-style circuit racing — widely regarded as one of the most dynamic formats in cycling — featuring fast-paced laps on closed routes that test both skill and stamina while offering spectators an up-close view of the action.
Founder of the Sierra Leone Cycling Development Trust, Abdul Karim Kamara, popularly known as Stylish, said the inaugural event is designed to unite cyclists nationwide while identifying the country’s top talents across multiple categories.
“This year, we are hosting the first Cycling Festival that will bring together riders from across Sierra Leone. It will give us the opportunity to determine the best male, female and junior cyclists, as well as the top Paralympic hand bike athlete and the best amateur rider in the country,” he stated.
Beyond competition, the festival will also feature participatory races and community-driven activities aimed at promoting healthy living and encouraging grassroots development of the sport.
Kamara emphasised the unique appeal of criterium racing, describing it as “cycling at its most dynamic — fast, technical, and thrilling for both riders and spectators.”
He called on Sierra Leoneans from all walks of life to turn out in large numbers and witness what he described as a transformative sporting event for Lunsar and the nation.
“Hosting the first Cycling Festival in Lunsar reflects our vision of creating a lifestyle destination that celebrates health, sport and community. We are proud to provide a world-class setting for elite riders, para-athletes and future champions,” he said.
He added that the festival will not only elevate cycling in Sierra Leone but also position Lunsar as a hub for major sporting events, while offering families and fans a unique and memorable experience.
With anticipation building, the 2026 Lunsar Cycling Festival is poised to set a new benchmark for cycling competitions in the country and lay the foundation for its growth at both grassroots and elite levels.
