The highest court of Sierra Leone’s judicature, the Supreme Court, presided over by five erudite judges has on Friday, 9th May 2025 ruled that the Motor Drivers Union and General Transport Workers Union should conduct its national executive elections on June 30, 2025, and also that the union should  regularize the memberships of the union.

The ruling follows a legal dispute between the Plaintiff, Alpha Amadu Bah, the Union’s current President, and Respondent, Abu Saidu that led to an earlier injunction by the court on March 20, 2025, halting the union’s elections.

The conflict escalated when Bah filed a Notice of Motion on November 20, 2024, seeking court intervention to prevent alleged external interference in the union’s electoral process.

The Supreme Court initially issued an injunction, barring all parties from proceeding with the elections until a final decision was reached by the court.

After listening to the submissions by lawyers of the Plaintiff and Respondent, the Supreme Court has set a deadline of June 30, 2025 for the union to hold its elections with strict compliance with legal and procedural standards.

The court also emphasized the need to regularize all union memberships such as to address concerns over voter’s eligibility and fair representation.

The Motor Drivers and General Transport Workers Union is a key organization representing transport workers across Sierra Leone.
