APC SHOULD FOCUS ON A FLAGBEARER

If the All Peoples Congress (APC) is serious of coming back to power, it must first ensure that it chooses a leader who possesses the character, competence, credibility, and vision needed to inspire confidence both within the party and across the nation.
Winning an election begins long before campaign posters are printed or rallies are organized. It begins with leadership. A strong flagbearer serves as the face, voice, and identity of a political party. Every speech delivered, every policy proposed, and every public appearance shapes how voters perceive not only the candidate but also the party as a whole. If the flagbearer lacks credibility, integrity, or the ability to unite people, even the strongest political organization can struggle to gain widespread public support.

The APC has a proud and significant place in Sierra Leone’s political history. Throughout the years, it has produced leaders who have contributed to the country’s governance and national development. Like every major political party, however, it has also experienced periods of electoral success, internal challenges, and moments of reflection. As the party prepares for another opportunity to present itself to the electorate, it has a responsibility to learn from the past and position itself for the future.

Selecting a flagbearer should never be treated as a popularity contest or a reward for seniority. It should be a careful and transparent process aimed at identifying the individual best equipped to lead both the party and, if elected, the nation. Sierra Leoneans today expect more from political leaders than inspiring speeches and campaign promises. They want competence, accountability, humility, honesty, and a genuine commitment to national development.

The APC’s greatest strength ahead of any election will not simply be its campaign machinery but the confidence that its chosen flagbearer inspires among party members, undecided voters, young people, professionals, traditional leaders, women, and the wider public. A candidate who can unite diverse groups within the party will be better positioned to unite the country if entrusted with national leadership.

Internal unity is another critical factor. Political parties often face disagreements during leadership contests, but how those contests are managed can determine future success. If members believe the selection process is fair, transparent, and based on merit, they are more likely to support the eventual flagbearer wholeheartedly. Conversely, if divisions persist after the selection process, they can weaken campaign efforts and reduce public confidence.

A great flagbearer should also possess a clear and practical vision for Sierra Leone’s future. Citizens are increasingly interested in realistic solutions to everyday challenges such as youth unemployment, economic growth, healthcare, education, agriculture, infrastructure, and the cost of living. Voters are more likely to support a leader who presents achievable policies supported by credible implementation plans than one who relies solely on political slogans.

Equally important is integrity. Public trust is one of the most valuable assets any political leader can possess. A flagbearer who demonstrates honesty, transparency, respect for democratic institutions, and accountability is more likely to earn the confidence of citizens across political divides. In today’s political environment, where information spreads rapidly through traditional and social media, personal conduct and public reputation matter more than ever.

The APC should also recognize the importance of appealing beyond its traditional support base. Elections are won by building broad coalitions of support. A successful flagbearer must be able to communicate effectively with people from every district, region, religion, ethnicity, profession, and generation. Leadership that embraces inclusivity and national unity can strengthen both the party and the country.

Young people deserve particular attention. They represent a significant proportion of Sierra Leone’s population and will play a decisive role in future elections. Many young citizens seek opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, quality education, skills development, and meaningful participation in governance. A flagbearer who listens to their concerns, engages them respectfully, and presents practical solutions will be better positioned to inspire confidence among this important demographic.

Women also play an indispensable role in Sierra Leone’s democracy. Any aspiring flagbearer should demonstrate a commitment to promoting women’s participation in leadership, supporting policies that improve opportunities for women and girls, and ensuring that governance reflects the interests of all citizens. Inclusive leadership strengthens democratic institutions and promotes national development.

The APC should resist the temptation to focus exclusively on campaign tactics, political calculations, or electoral arithmetic. These strategies are important, but they cannot compensate for weak leadership. A compelling manifesto, energetic supporters, and effective communication are most impactful when they are led by a candidate who commands public respect and demonstrates the qualities expected of a national leader.

Choosing a flagbearer is therefore not simply about preparing for the next election; it is about preparing for the responsibility of governing. Leadership requires wisdom, resilience, sound judgment, effective communication, and the ability to make difficult decisions in the national interest. The individual chosen should be prepared not only to contest an election but also to lead a diverse nation through opportunities and challenges.

Ultimately, the APC’s path to future electoral success begins with selecting the right person to carry its banner. A respected, competent, and visionary flagbearer can energize party members, attract independent voters, strengthen public confidence, and provide a strong foundation for an effective campaign. Without such leadership, even the most determined electoral efforts may struggle to achieve their goals.

As Sierra Leone’s democracy continues to mature, citizens are increasingly evaluating political parties not only by their history but by the quality of the leaders they present. For the APC, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. By prioritizing merit, integrity, competence, unity, and national vision in choosing its flagbearer, the party can demonstrate that it is preparing not merely to compete in the next election but to offer leadership capable of serving the interests of the entire nation.

In the end, elections may determine who occupies public office, but leadership determines how history remembers them. If the APC truly wishes to position itself for future success, its first priority should not simply be winning the next election. Its first priority should be choosing an exceptional flagbearer-one who can unite the party, earn the trust of the people, and offer a credible vision for Sierra Leone’s future.
