Orange Sierrra Leone (SL), the country’s leading telecoms company, is on the verge of donating assorted food items worth Le 286,110,000 to muslims in mosques.
An Orange SL document seen by Nightwatch indicates that 10 community mosques in Freetown Central Business district, Freetown Lungi, South, Eastern and Northern Regions stand to benefit from the donations.
The donation is set to commence this Monday and ends the 21st May, this year.
The items to be donated include bags of rice, oil, sugar, onions, milk among other items.
Two mosques in every region in Sierra Leone would benefit from Orange SL’s intended donations.
The donation is geared towards reaching muslims and the poor in deprived communities across Sierra Leone.
The donation comes at a time it is needed most considering that the country is in a fasting period and many others are in quarantine facilities.
Ramadan, being a period of fasting, generosity, reflection, sacrifice, alms giving, and zakat are key religious obligations required of muslims who meet the necessary criteria to donate a portion of their earnings to the poor or towards charitable causes.
Before this time, Orange SL used to meet beggars on the streets and help them with donations of food and other items.
But, Ramadan and the outbreak of Coronavirus have caused the telecoms company to take the donation to mosques.
Apart from the Ramadan period, Sierra Leone is in a critical situation riddled with lockdowns to strengthen the campaign against COVID-19.
Most Commnunities in Sierra Leone depend on hand-to-mouth survival as a great number of Sierrra Leoneans eat what they make for the day.
This implies that in situations of lockdowns, life become very difficult for them.
Currently, health workers and other support staff are yet to receive their salaries or allowances owing to the difficult conditions prevalent in Sierra Leone.
Since COVID-19 outbreak, the mobile network operator has constantly collaborated with government by intervening in key priority areas to halt the spread of COVID-19.
In its various intervention programmes, Orange SL has donated personal protective equipment to health workers, food and non-food items to some communities in Sierra Leone.
Most importantly, the company has contributed tremendously to the effective flow of communication services in the country as well as consolidating the free on-line studies pronounced by the Ministry of education.
In the early stages of the Coronavirus pandemic, Orange SL, sometime in March and April this year, provided personal protective gears to the people of constituencies 112 and 128.
Hand sanitisers, veronica buckets, gloves among others were the items donated to the two constituencies covering Western Area Rural district and other communities including Wilberforce, Tengbeh Town, Hill Station.
Members of parliament representing the two constituencies, Hon. Haja Miatta Amara and Hon. Benjamin Turay received the donated items on behalf of their people for which they commended Orange SL.
The donated materials are now placed at designated points in communities where the beneficiaries can wash their hands frequently and adhere to other safe health practices.
URL links have been zero-rated to enhance the free on-line studies, communication services improved, caller ring-back tunes configured to convey COVID-19 prevention messages, Orange SL surfaces disinfected and sanitised to keep staff safe and Airtel money operations strengthened aimed at reducing queues in Orange SL facilities.
The telecoms company have won the admiration and respect by a number of Sierra Leoneans owing to the number of donations and actions undertaken in this dangerous moment.
On 23rd April, 2020, management and staff of Orange SL was commended by Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), an institution charged with the responsibility of mobilising the campaign to defeat COVID-19 in Sierra Leone.
The mobile network operator enjoyed the admiration and commendation for its unwavering solidarity with government in the COVID-19 campaign through its support to health workers at the three designated COVID-19 treatment centres through the WANPOT bundle.
The BUNDLE offer ensures affordable and discounted rates, data and SMS.
The contributions made by Orange SL in the midst of COVID-19 in totality places it in a class of its own in the corporate world.
By all indications, Orange SL is determined to do more to continue to win the admiration, respect and trust of all Sierra Leoneans especially intensifying the campaign against Coronavirus pandemic.
