Rodney Michael

It is both unfortunate and disingenuous for anyone to reduce the legacy of Rodney Michael, a man who has dedicated over 38 years of his life to the development of football in Sierra Leone – to nothing more than a “dangerous football politician.” Such attacks reek of fear, not fact. And they reflect the very politicization they accuse him of.

Rodney Michael’s name is etched in the annals of Sierra Leonean football not because of opportunism, but because of a consistent, transparent and decades-long visionary commitment to football in Sierra Leone. His contributions span across grassroots development, youth football, club administration, and with eventual benefit to our darling Leone Stars. His work has inspired countless young footballers, administrators, and fans across the country who still see in him a symbol of integrity and reform.

Let’s be clear: Rodney Michael has always stood for accountability, democracy, and progress in Salone football. His recent position regarding the upcoming SLFA Congress is not borne out of selfish ambition, but out of genuine concern for process, transparency, and credibility. It is within his right, as it is for any stakeholder, to question a process that he believes may not serve the long-term interest of the game.

Those who attempt to tarnish his reputation by referencing his management of Edmond Michael Foundation FC either lack understanding of the constraints faced by many local clubs or are simply choosing to ignore the fact that Rodney’s club has consistently provided opportunities to young players in an underfunded and under-supported football ecosystem. They forget that Edmond Michael Foundation is the only club to have won a National Under 17 tournament and represented the country in Kenya.

Instead of launching character assassinations on Rodney, it would serve Sierra Leonean football better if we focused on creating a level playing field where ideas can contend, where the truth matters, and where genuine voices are not silenced by political convenience.

Assuming the allegations were true, which they are not, calling for a Normalization Committee, at a time when the Exco is divided and the congress was very violent, is not an act of sabotage, it is an appeal for structural reform, especially if stakeholders believe the current process lacks fairness or inclusivity. FIFA itself has used Normalization Committees globally to restore credibility where electoral or governance crises have arisen.

Rodney Michael’s voice is not one to be silenced. It is one to be respected – even if you disagree with him. He has earned that through decades of service, integrity, and passion for football. He is not a threat to progress; he is a catalyst for it.

Sierra Leonean football does not need blind obedience or loyalty. It needs bold voices, credible leadership, and honest conversations. Rodney Michael provides all three.

No one can reduce the respect Rodney has earned, he worked hard for it and deserves it, and the Rodney the Nation knows and appreciates so much will  never be bullied and silenced. Don’t waste your time!
