Rokel Commercial Bank Ends Historic And Maiden Sports Meet

Rokel Commercial Bank, one of Sierra Leone’s indigenous banks, has ended a one day sports meet on Independence Day, 27th April, at the Milton Margai Beach, Goderich in Freetown.
The sports meets was organized as part of the activities marking the 58th Independence celebrations of the country. The Sports meet was organized internally among staff members and the various branches of the Rokel Commercial Bank were divided into four houses: the headquarters of RCB in Freetown was placed at Yellow house and named Chris Walton, Kenema ,Bo and Congo Cross branches were placed Yellow and named Henry Macauley House, Clock Tower, Moyamba, Koidu, Charles Street and Wellington branches were placed at grey house and named Victor Cole House, Siaka Stevens Street, Pujehun and Wilberforce Street branches were placed Mauve house and named John Okrafor Smart house.


The various events are distance sprinting, sack race, accra among the women, and eating competition among others. Victor Cole house (Grey) carried the day, while John Okrafor Smart house (mauve) bagged the second position. The Third and fourth positions went to Chris Walton (Yellow) and Henry Macauley house (Blue) respectively.


According to Mr. Walton Gilpin, the Managing Director of Rokel Commercial Bank, the purpose of the one day sports meet was to invigorate staff morale. He continued that, the move to organize such an event is a novelty for the Rokel Commercial Bank and the entire banking sector in the country.


Madam Mariama Jajua, Marketing Manager Rokel Commercial Bank noted told nightwatch that this was the initiative of the Managing Director, Mr. Gilpin and that it was able to bring all the workers of RCB together. She revealed that they had fun outside the normal tense work environment that characterizes banking operations.


The feedback from members of staff of RCB and other senior managers was good. They have requested that, Management makes the event an annual affair, noting that “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.”
The Rokel Commercial Bank Managing Director is full of initiatives that are always geared towards improving workers’ performance. He is a recipient of numerous national and international awards for his support to the growth of the banking sector and his use of technological innovations to increase financial inclusion in Sierra Leone.


The Managing Director is notable for religiously following the development aspirations of the New Direction Government by hugely investing in education, women’s empowerment and Health and sanitation.
